A full bodied and concentrated wine with aromas of soft fruit, plum and Morello cherry. Well balanced through to a dry, lingering finish.

Producer Note

Basilisco is Feudi di San Gregorio’s winery in Basilicata, located in the commune of Barile, in the very heart of the Aglianico del Vulture DOCG. The vineyard sits at altitude and the vines are grown in volcanic soils, surrounded by olive trees and nourished by the warm Italian sunshine, conditions which are ideally suited to southern Italy’s flagship variety, Aglianico. The vines are farmed organically under the watchful eye of Pierpaolo Sirch and have been certified as organic from the 2015 vintage.

Vineyard

The 25 hectares of vineyard are managed in the belief that through allowing the vines and soil to reach their own balance, it is possible to obtain the best fruit with the minimum of intervention. The "Historical" vineyard is located in Barile, a beautiful old six hectare vineyard where the vines are grown on traditional "capanno", together with fruit and olive trees. Situated at 500 metres above sea level, the vines are planted at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare and are trained according to the Guyot method. The soils, which are volcanic, tuff stone and clayey, enrich the final wines with the unmistakable characteristics of freshness and minerality. The harvest is performed exclusively by hand, with each grape being picked at the optimum maturity.

Winemaking

Fermentation and maceration took place in stainless steel tanks for between 15 to 30 days, followed by a minimum of 12 months maturation in second and third year French oak barriques.

Tasting Note

A full bodied and textured wine with soft fruit aromas of plum and Morello cherry. Well balanced and full bodied with a long lasting finish.

Serving Suggestion

The cuisine of southern Italy is known for its simple, but full flavoured dishes. This is an excellent wine for a simple pasta flavoured with oil and red pepper, followed by roasted beef or lamb.
