Producer Note

Founded by the Mendez Family in 2002, the Pazo do Mar winery is dedicated to the production of Galician wine from the native varieties of Albariño, Treixadura, Godello and Mencia. The vineyards are situated 150 metres above sea level on slate and granite soils and are influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. This family-run estate aspires to find the perfect balance between traditional values and an innovative and modern approach to winemaking, resulting in a collection of stunning wines with freshness and personality.

Vintage

2020 was a classic Ribeiro vintage. Generous rainfall during the winter replenished the soil’s water reserves. The weather in spring was mild, creating good conditions for budding and flowering. The summer was warm, but not excessively so, allowing the physiological development of the vine to progress normally. However, in mid September, the weather changed, resulting in a rapid harvest to retain the quality of the fruit. The 2020 wines show refreshing acidity and clear, elegant aromatic characters.

Vineyard

This distinctive blend is made up of five native varieties which flourish in the Pazo do Mar vineyards in the heart of the Ribeiro region. The vines are planted at an elevation of 150 metres above sea level, where the soils are varied, but predominantly granitic which retains the heat of the day and encourages the grapes to reach good maturity. The climate is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, which has a cooling effect, resulting in grapes with good levels of natural acidity. The blend is made up of Treixadura, an aromatic variety that brings lemony notes and creamy body to the blend; Torrontés, another aromatic variety which imparts stone fruit notes with floral highlights; Albariño lends citrus flavours and naturally fresh, zippy acidity; while a small proportion of Loureriro offers refreshing citrus fruits and is low in alcohol and Godello offers mineral-rich complexity.

Winemaking

Each variety was vinified separately. The hand-picked grapes were cold macerated in stainless steel tanks prior to being gently pressed. Slow fermentation took place at controlled temperatures of 16°C lasting one month with fine lees imparting texture. The wines were deftly blended, before being gently fined and bottled without any influence of oak, showcasing the aromatic characteristics and purity of fruit in this distinctive blend.

Tasting Note

An intensely aromatic and complex blend delivering juicy stone fruit flavours complemented by delicate spicy and floral notes. Vibrant and crisp, with layers of citrus fruit surrounding the smooth and creamy palate through to a refreshing finish.
