San Marzano was established in 2008, and continued to build upon an already incredible tradition of viticulture and wine production. The cooperative was purchased by a group of wine lovers who joined forces to rescue a treasured winery from financial difficulties. The investors knew the potential of this unique land and were able to capitalise on the best aspects of the terroir, climate and unfaltering human endeavour to produce wonderful wines. The village of Sava is at the centre of the Primitivo di Manduria DOC, an area renowned for the production of exceptional fruit driven reds made from the indigenous Primitivo grape. The company also produces wines from Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera and Malvasia Bianca. Their aim is to produce high quality wines typical of the region to be experienced and enjoyed by connoisseurs throughout the world.

Tasting Note

An intense aroma of plum, cherry and spice, with hints of rosemary and vanilla. A full bodied wine, soft and balanced, full of ripe fruit flavours through to a savoury finish.

Producer Note

In 1962, 19 vine growers from San Marzano whose families had farmed the land for generations, combined their efforts to establish 'Cantine San Marzano'. Through the decades this cooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 vine growers. Using modern and technologically advanced vinification techniques they produce elegant wines that pay homage to the ancient Apulian wine traditions. The fusion of time honoured tradition, passion and contemporary techniques, enables this winery to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characteristics while reflecting the local terroir. In the Sommelier Wine Awards, San Marzano was awarded European Producer of the Year 2017.

Vineyard

The vineyard is approximately 100 metres above sea level, with high average temperatures and medium-low rainfall. The soft soil layer is clayey and quite thin, with a good presence of rocks. The grapes are harvested during the first week of September when they have reached optimal ripeness.

Winemaking

The grapes underwent temperature controlled maceration for approximately 10 days to extract the desired level of colour, flavour and fine tannins. Alcoholic fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts. The wine was made in an unoaked style to preserve the vibrancy of fruit and varietal characteristics.

Serving Suggestion
