Producer Note

Pierre Naigeon is a leading and renowned producer in the Côtes de Nuits. The Naigeon family has been established in Gevrey-Chambertin for over 150 years. They acquired some vines and started to produce wine in 1890. The estate remained reasonably small until 2003 when Pierre purchased more land increasing their holdings to 11.5 hectares. Pierre Naigeon believes passionately in sustainable farming, without the use of herbicides. He believes in non-interventionist winemaking and aims to produce wines full of fragrance, revealing the natural terroir. The average age of his vines is remarkably high, mostly over 50 years, which endows the wines with an extraordinary quality, maturity and concentration.

Vintage

2016 was generally a challenging vintage due to damaging hailstorms and widespread frosts which resulted in lower yields. Fine weather in September helped to rescue this vintage. The fruit that remained was good quality, without extremes of acidity, alcohol or fruit concentration, resulting in a classic style of Burgundy.

Vineyard

The 1er Cru vines are grown in a small parcel in the middle of the Gevrey Chambertin appellation, by the hill of the ‘Combe de Lavaux’. It is a sunny plot with a south eastern exposure which receives cooling breezes, which flow from the bottom of the valley. The soil is complex, ranging from limestone from Dijon to decarbonated silt. The vineyard is cultivated organically, without the use of herbicides and insecticides and will be certified from the 2019 vintage.

Winemaking

Pierre vinifies with minimal intervention. The grapes were fermented with natural yeast in a gravity fed winery, without the use of pumps. The wine was aged in French oak barrels for one year, of which 50% were new. Bottled without fining or filtration.

Tasting Note

A wine of great complexity, finesse and power that brings notes of black cherry and blackberry to the fore with delicate mineral undertones. Silky, with supple tannins and wonderful freshness.
