Producer Note

The Monemvasia Winery Tsimbidi was founded in 1997 with a clear objective: to revive the production of Malvasia wine in its birth place. The Frankish name for Monemvasia is Malvasia, which originally lent its name to the wine. In the 12th century and for the subsequent 300 years, this wine ruled the European world. It is still produced in many countries, but until recently was not being produced in the country of its origin - Greece. The Monemvasia Winery created the first privately owned 121 hectares of vineyard, planted with local varieties. It is committed to producing quality wines which showcase the characteristics of the indigenous varieties and the terroir of the peninsula of Maleus.

Vineyard

Voltes is a blend of two native grape varieties: Roditis and Moschofilero. The Roditis grapes are grown in selected vineyards in the region of Achaia, in semi-mountainous terrain. The variety is late-ripening and suited to a Mediterranean climate. Wines made from Roditis are terroir-driven; the character of the grapes is strongly influenced by where they are grown. At this higher altitude, there is a significant diurnal temperature shift and poor, well-drained soils, resulting in complex wines with natural acidity. The pink-skinned, aromatic Moschofilero grapes are from selected vineyards in the plateau of Mantineia in Arcadia. The cool micro-climates of both regions, combined with the characteristics of both varieties, contribute to the freshness and aromatic nature of this blend. The grapes are hand-harvested.

Winemaking

Each variety was vinified separately. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of 18°C, followed by short maceration on the fine lees to impart texture and subtle complexity.

Tasting Note

Pale lemon in colour, this smooth and refreshing blend of native Greek varieties offers aromas of freshly-cut flowers, green apple and juicy stone fruit. Textured on the palate, with a touch of minerality on the finish.
