Tasting Note

Bright purple-red colour. Complex, typical bouquet of small berries red fruits, leather and spices (vanilla, pepper, clove), with hints of ripe blackberry. Rounded tannins, balanced acidity and well integrated wood tones.

Producer Note

Alpha Estate is located in Amyndeon, North West Greece. It is the brainchild of two visionaries, 2nd generation vine grower Makis Mavridis and Bordeaux trained winemaker Angelos Iatrides. Angelos is one of the most talented winemakers working in Europe. This pristine estate in the cool highlands of Western Macedonia employs the most up to date vineyard techniques and winemaking technology to produce world class wines from French and indigenous Greek varietals.

Vineyard

There are 69 hectares of privately owned vineyards, which are located on the Amyndeon plateau, in north western Macedonia in the Anyndeon viticulture zone. Grown in the sub region known as "Hedgehog", which is located at 690 metres above sea level and faces Lake Petron and Mount Voras. The soils are composed of sandy clay and have excellent drainage.

Winemaking

The grapes were de-stemmed, prior to a light crushing and a cold soak with skin contact. The alcoholic fermentation took place at gradually increasing temperatures. The wine was then maintained on its fine lees or "sur lie", for a period of approximately eight months with regular stirring. Maturation lasted for 12 months in French oak barrels of medium grain, with a light toasting, followed by 12 months bottle ageing.

Serving Suggestion

Perfect match with juicy red barbecued meats, venison steak, rich stews and red peppers baked in olive oil.
