Producer Note
What a great concept - a Tour of the South of France - get out the vélo and let's join the touriste-routiers. But why be part of the peloton when you can attack from the front, and make wine which really matters and offer wine lovers liberté de choix? Hence, among the delights on offer here is a beautiful Picpoul de Pinet - the fish wine - a vivacious Grenache Blanc/Sauvignon Blanc blend and a quite beautiful and unusual Grenache/ Pinot Noir blend.
Vintage
2016 saw generally sunny and warm conditions throughout the summer, coupled with cooler nights. Some regions endured a lack of rainfall, which resulted in smaller yields of concentrated juice. The dry conditions reduced disease pressure in the vineyards and resulted in good quality wines across reds and whites, showing high flavour intensity.
Vineyard
This wine was sourced from long standing suppliers in the Gers area of the mid- Pyrénées area of South West France in the spring. We were looking for a Colombard blend with typical Gascogne characteristics of versatility and balance. The vines are grown in vineyards which sit among the rolling hills and are warmed by the hot Mediterranean sun.
Winemaking
The grapes were fermented in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures, using selected yeasts. Made in an unoaked style to preserve the purity of fruit, the wine did not go through a malolactic fermentation to retain the fresh and vibrant character. The varieties were held separately until blending which took place in the March following the vintage.
Tasting Note
This is a zippy, zesty blend of Colombard and Sauvignon Blanc, which shows vibrant notes of grapefruit and orange peel. Fresh, lively and aromatic, this is an approachable style with a long persistent flavour.
Serving Suggestion
This versatile wine is a perfect appetiser and can also accompany a large range of cheeses, especially goat's cheese. Also accompanies shellfish or asparagus dishes.
