Domaine René Monnier is a leading and sought-after producer situated in the heart of Meursault. With over 18 hectares of vineyard in the most prestigious Crus of the Côte de Beaune, Domaine René Monnier is one of the largest privately owned domains in the region. Founded in 1723, the domain is now in the hands of the tenth generation, with all the wines being skilfully made by Xavier Monnot. Domaine René Monnier's white wines are fresh and stylish avoiding an excessive use of oak, while the reds are the epitome of fine Burgundy demonstrating the balanced, silky style of this house.
2019 has been cited as an outstanding vintage and one of the best in recent years. The dry, warm conditions produced low yields of impeccably balanced, concentrated wines with searing freshness and remarkable purity. A mild winter was followed by a chilly spring, with frosts affecting some areas. Cooler temperatures in June resulted in uneven flowering in some vineyards. However, temperatures soared in July and August with vines under hydric stress, resulting in superb concentration of flavours.
The vineyards are farmed according to "La lutte raisonnée", using sustainable agriculture methods, reducing the use of chemicals in order to respect the land and its environment. The soils in the vineyard have a high limestone content, retaining moisture in dry weather, but also offering good drainage in cooler weather.
Whole bunches were carefully selected and then gently pressed, followed by a static settling of the must prior to fermentation. Fermentation took place in new French oak. The wine was aged in oak barrels, 30% of which were new oak for a period of 14 months, during which delicate bâtonnage of the lees took place imparting complexity and texture to the palate. The wine went through malolactic fermentation, prior to being lightly fined and filtered. Estate bottled using gravity.
A delicious accompaniment to shellfish, especially lobster and scallops.
