Oastbrook Estate is an idyllic English vineyard set in the heart of the Sussex countryside, close to Bodiam Castle. America Brewer, who is originally from Brazil, has fond memories of an ancient vine that crept up the side of the house she lived in as a child in Bahia. She used to climb the old, twisted vine and enjoyed picking the fresh, succulent grapes. America’s childhood passion for vines was reignited in 2018 when she planted the vineyard at Oastbrook Estate. The beautiful farm is steeped in heritage, complete with an original Oasthouse and its distinctive conical roof. Iron was smelted here in Roman times from the ironstone that lies on the surface of the fields and the iron is also responsible for the creation of a natural spring on the farm. There are several natural brooks dotted around the estate- Gypsy Brook, Channel Brook and perhaps the most poetic Oastbrook, from which the wine takes its name.
2018 offered exceptionally warm weather from late April until the end of July, with high temperatures at the end of June providing perfect conditions for flowering. Due to the warm conditions, véraison took place earlier than usual. Rainfall in August, followed by dry weather in September enabled the grapes to fully ripen and accumulate excellent sugar levels. Harvesting took place earlier than usual to preserve the characteristic acidity of the Pinot Gris variety.
The Oastbrook Estate vines are grown at a relatively low altitude of between 6 to 30 metres above sea level in a south facing vineyard in East Sussex, where the temperate microclimate produces premium grapes. The vines are planted in a freedraining soil atop a sandstone ridge; however, the proximity of the Rother River which frames the estate, imbues the land with deposits of clay and silt. The vines are trained on a double Guyot replacement cane which allows for good exposure to the sun and encourages photosynthesis. The philosophy is to produce vibrant wines which express the Sussex terroir; the vines are cultivated sustainably and mechanical intervention is favoured over chemical application. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimum maturity.
The Pinot Gris grapes were de-stemmed and underwent light maceration before being gently pressed. The must was fermented in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures, allowing the purity of fruit to shine through. The wine was matured in stainless steel tanks for nine months prior to bottling, to ensure freshness and vibrancy.
The floral bouquet develops into a mouth-watering array of ripe tropical notes and lifted green fruit aromas with subtle hints of jasmine, sweet ginger and elderflower. Poised and balanced on the palate, this refreshing Pinot Gris delivers an energetic fusion of lime zest and pear drop through to an intensely fruity finish.
