Cantina Tramin Stoan 2018, Alto Adige DOC

Producer Note

Cantina Tramin was founded in 1898 and has 310 member winegrowers who follow its strict directives on the cultivation of the vines. The vineyards are an integral part of the enchanting and picturesque landscape of the Alto-Adige region of Northern Italy and cover 260 hectares situated on the sunny slopes of the region at altitudes ranging from 250 to 850 metres above sea level. In 2011, Cantina Tramin gained the "Double Stella" award. This is given to a winery for achieving the prestigious "3 Bicchieri" 20 times and is awarded by the Gambero Rosso.

Vintage

Bud-break took place slightly later than usual, but high temperatures and humidity precipitated flowering. From mid-June the weather was hot and dry; and the vines benefitted from slight water stress. Intense rainfall shortly before harvest was beneficial for the vines, enabling the grapes to reach the final stages of maturity without reaching drought stress. Harvest took place under ideal conditions and the whites are elegant with delicate acidity.

Vineyard

The vineyard soils are made up of calcareous clay, limestone and a high presence of stone. Indeed, the name this wine refers to the stony soil in which the grapes are grown, which in local dialect is referred to as "stoan."

Winemaking

The grapes were gently pressed. Fermentation took place in large oak barrels at temperatures of between 18 to 20˚C. Partial malolactic fermentation followed. Clarification took place through a natural sedimentation of the particles. The wine was matured in large wooden barrels for a period of 11 months, during which time the wine was in constant contact with the fine lees, adding texture and complexity. After the wine had been blended and bottled, it was cellared in bottle for a further three months, prior to release.

Tasting Note

This mouth-watering white has complex aromas of peach, apricot, pear, elderflower and floral notes of jasmine. Elegant and spicy aromatics follow through on to the rich, full bodied palate, which displays flavours of pineapple, pear, tomato leaves enveloped in a citrus zest. Harmoniously balanced, with a mineral complexity on the long- lasting creamy finish.

Serving Suggestion

This wine pairs deliciously with flavourful starters, such as tuna ceviche; dishes such as grilled chicken with mango salsa or swordfish with lemon confit.
