A refreshing rosé, with delicate floral notes layered with wild strawberry, raspberry and cherry flavours through to a crisp finish.
One of the main protagonists in the renaissance of Southern Italian wines, Feudi di San Gregorio has carved out a reputation for making truly world-class wines in less than 30 years. The company began in the mid 1980s with the aim of safeguarding local traditions and unlocking the potential of key indigenous grapes such as Fiano, Greco, Falanghina and Aglianico. In 2021, Feudi di San Gregorio was awarded the Equalitas certification which officially recognises social, environmental and economic pillars of sustainability, through biodiversity, carbon and water footprint and ecological cultivation practices. A multi-award winning producer, Feudi di San Gregorio also features in the 2021 Wine & Spirits Top 100 Wineries.
The 2020 vintage was fairly homogeneous throughout the region. The early part of the year was characterised by mild temperatures and moderate rainfall, which contributed to budding in mid-April, with April and May recording above-average temperatures. In early June, an anticyclone from Northern Europe marked a sudden lowering of average temperatures by 3°C, which slowed down the vegetative cycle of the vine, delaying flowering and consequently the fruit set. However, the fruit was harvested under good conditions and shows good varietal typicity.
This historic region of the Apennine countryside is known as Irpinia and it has a unique terroir and climate in which vineyards coexist with fruit trees, olives and aromatic herbs. The winds here divert a beneficial rainfall which creates a microclimate in Irpinia that differs from Campania. The winters, though brief, are snowy and cold, while the summers can be wet and prolonged. The Guyot trained and spur cordon pruned vines are planted in volcanic, sandstone and marl soils. In accordance with the sustainable Equalitas certification, the vineyards are cultivated using ecological practices to maintain the equilibrium of the environment. Soil and fertiliser management strategies are employed, pesticides are not used, biodiversity is positively encouraged and weeding does not take place between the rows of vines.
The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected before vinification. Fermentation took place with selected yeasts in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of 16 to 18°C, with limited skin maceration to impart the delicate pale rosé colour. The wine spent four months in stainless steel tanks to retain the purity of fruit, before being gently filtered and fined prior to bottling. The distinctive packaging is inspired by Massimo Vignelli, with delicate fluting around the bottle.
An intense and crystal-clear rosé, with delicate floral overtones layered with wild strawberry and raspberry notes. Crisp and refreshing, with nuances of cherry and wild red fruits surrounding an uplifting finish.
