Producer Note

Vinos de Montaña is a range of mountain wines from high-altitude vineyards in Sierra de Gredos and Sierra de Gata in the Sistema Central, the mountain chain that divides the Iberian Peninsula in its northern and southern halves. This project aims to reinvigorate old vineyards and sustain the communities that farm them. The wines are based mostly on very old Garnacha vines which are grown in granite soils, resulting in a perfumed, delicate and fresh expression of Garnacha, displaying the character of the vineyard parcels and villages in which they were grown.

Vintage

The 2018 vintage was characterised by a late harvest. Heavy rainfall during spring replenished the soil water reserves to nourish the vines during the summer. A mild summer followed creating a long, slow maturation period.

Vineyard

The wine is made from 100% Garnacha grapes grown in the village of Cadalso de los Vidrios, which is located in the Sierra de Gredos. As part of the Sistema Central Mountain range, it forms the backbone of the Iberian Peninsula and is a sprawling system boasting a rich and diverse heritage of grape growing, with a number of unusual varieties- many are not grown elsewhere in Spain. The soils are decomposed granite which produce fine, elegant and age-worthy wines. The vines are planted at between 700 to 1,100 metres above sea level. These high altitude sites deliver wide diurnal temperatures which encourage a long, gradual ripening season for the fruit, producing concentrated flavours from the warm, sunny days coupled with fresh, balancing acidity from the cool nights. The very old bush vines are up to 90 years old and produce low yields of concentrated juice. They are mostly grown in small, terraced parcels with a northerly orientation and are hand-harvested.

Winemaking

The grapes were carefully sorted and de-stemmed prior to fermentation in concrete tanks with selected natural yeasts for maximum expression of the personality of the village of Cadalso. The wine was aged for five months in concrete tanks, without any oak influence to showcase the purity of fruit.

Tasting Note

A light, delicate and perfumed expression of Garnacha, with crunchy blueberries enhanced by subtle floral hints. Fresh, with firm tannins surrounding a core of lively fruit through to a sustained finish.
