Tasting Note

Paler ruby than some earlier vintages due to the extreme proportion of Grenache, the nose is however as explosive, plush and opulent as ever, layered with exotic spice, cracked black pepper and of course streaked with crushed vanillin. The palate is instantly appealing, polished and smooth on entry but steeped in depth and texture as the flavours swirl around, lengthen and delight. The lasting impression is satisfying but subtle and fine, not overpowering as perhaps in earlier vintages when they were first released, but a better, finer wine; of course time will be the ultimate judge.

Producer Details

Boutinot's love affair with the southern Rhône is both enduring and unswerving. They firmly believe that they can make great wine here. And for this reason, they have bought their first vineyard in France, here in the southern Rhône – in the village of Cairanne. Ten years ago they first glimpsed the potential of the vineyards of Cairanne when they released their 2000 vintage of La Côte Sauvage. Now they have several plots of old vines that they can call their own and begin to realise their dream of making even better wine.
Over the past decade or so they have built enviable relationships with a network of local growers and they will of course continue to source grapes and wine from their trove of prized vineyards for their full range of Rhône wines.

In The Vineyard

The vineyards lie on the craggy slopes around the historic village of Séguret, in the heartland of southern Rhône. These terraced vineyards are planted with noble grape varieties of Syrah and Grenache.

Food Recommendations

Big hearty casseroles and juicy meat dishes.

2009 Vintage: "This rock-solid red is dark and muscular, but also perfumy, with an inviting aroma of warm ganache followed by slightly burly currant paste, melted licorice and cherry pâte de fruit flavors. A ganache note takes an encore on the finish. Drink now through 2015". 91 points. James Molesworth, Wine Spectator
2009 Vintage: “One of the highest rated Ségurets I was able to taste for this report… Showing loads of barrel spice, vanilla, leather, and dried flowers, as well as a core of sweet red fruits, this unique 2009 is medium to full-bodied, balanced, and elegant, with a light, seamless texture and fantastic length. The oak shows here (and probably always will), yet it comes across more in a spice-driven way than raw wood…This beautifully constructed 2009 will evolve gracefully for over a decade”. 91 Points. The Rhône
Report – Issue 13, October 2012 "Full ruby, more lively than most overheated 2003's, shows elegance of ripe Grenache." 3 Stars. Steven
Spurrier, Decanter Magazine, September 2007
2003 Vintage: IWC 2008 - Judges comments "Sweet oak and spice, dark berries and chocolate with some development on the palate
