Tenuta di Castiglioni was the first estate cultivated by the Frescobaldi family, which has produced over 700 vintages. The family’s passion for wine in this area started in Castiglioni, along the road of the same name, which the ancient Romans built to link Rome to Tuscany. On the gentle hills of Val di Pesa, southwest of Florence, the combination of the terroir, the mild climate and the characteristic afternoon sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea is expressed in the Tenuta di Castiglioni wines which are structured, generous and show a rich, purity of fruit.
The vines began to sprout new shoots in early April following a dry and relatively mild winter. March and April saw a few showers which added to the water reserves needed for the young shoots to grow and develop. The flowering stage and subsequent summer season were characterised by a lack of rainfall and high temperatures that enabled the grape bunches to grow and mature in a healthy environment. Thanks to their ability to store moisture, Castiglioni’s typical clay-rich soils played an essential role in alleviating drought stress caused by the lack of rain in summer, and helped the grapes to reach highly concentrated levels of sugar and polyphenols.
Tenuta Castiglioni is situated in the gentle hills of Val di Pesa. The richness of the weather and the terroir is expressed in the structure of the wines, due to the symbiosis between the soil, the mild climate and the afternoon breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The grapes for this wine are grown in a vineyard where the soils are made up of calcareous clay which is rich in stone.
Temperature controlled fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at 30°C and lasted for 12 days, followed by a maceration on skins for four weeks, to extract colour, flavour and fine tannins. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was matured in oak barriques for 12 months. The wine received a further two months bottle age, prior to release.
Sweet fruits open the nose, with aromas of blueberry, cherry, accompanied by underlying black pepper spice and vanilla nuances. On the palate the wine is generous, full-bodied and enveloping. Ripe fruits are evident on the palate complemented by elegant toasted notes that create an intense and harmonious finish.
Accompanies stewed or pan-fried meats; roasted pork; or full-flavoured cheese.
