Producer Note

Named ‘Winery of the Year’ by James Halliday and Matt Skinner, Larry Cherubino wants his wines to be distinctive and to speak clearly of their variety and vineyard site. He believes in paying meticulous attention to the vineyard, canopy and water management, picking at the right time and minimal intervention in the winery. Larry also makes wine under the Laissez Faire label, an exquisite range of natural wines which are the ultimate expression of site, made in small batches from hand harvested grapes. From delicate whites to opulent reds, all his wines have pure class and finesse.

From the Porongurup to Frankland, the 2016 vintage saw excellent conditions throughout the season. The winter and spring months were dry, but good rainfall in January eased pressure bringing much needed moisture for vine growth and yields. The resulting wines are of excellent quality, whites have great verve and freshness and the reds are some of the best in recent memory.

The fruit was selected and hand-picked from sites across Frankland River, Western Australia. The vines were planted in 1997 to a density of 1650 vines per hectare and have a northern orientation, which maximises the exposure to the sun. Careful irrigation ensures the vines are healthy. The soils are granite, which are known for their heat retention properties and for promoting the even ripening of the berries.

The fruit was selected and hand-picked from sites across Frankland River, Western Australia. A cold maceration for four days preceded a long, cool, temperature controlled fermentation, which took place in small lot fermenters. A moderate extraction was aimed for, ensuring the vineyard characters were fully expressed. The wine was then aged in new and one year old oak, for six to eight months enhancing the wine with a subtle oak complexity.

Tasting Note

Aromas of red earth, ground black spice and dark berries lead to a palate of fine, silky tannins. Juicy fruit flavours of blueberry and dark cherry combine with undertones of spice.

Serving Suggestion

Delicious with slow cooked meats and hard cheese
