First released in 1989, Lockwood Vineyard was developed under the belief that world class estate produced wines are attainable through ideal vineyard location and quality winemaking. Lockwood Vineyard's founders, Paul Toeppen, Phil Johnson and Butch Lindley, who have cumulative vineyard management experience of over 90 years, first planted the large 1,850 acre San Lucas Vineyard in 1981 after concluding that the parcel was perfect for growing premium grapes. The vineyard is in a remote area nestled at the base of the Santa Lucia mountain range, in Monterey County, and is one of the largest premium estate vineyards in the world. Under the new ownership of Boisset Family Estates, Lockwood Vineyard continues to be devoted to producing high quality estate grown wines.
The vineyard blocks are vigilantly maintained and viticultural practices are tailored to each vine's specific requirements. The vines are spur pruned and trellised according to a modified VSP system. Sustainable methods are practiced such as deficit irrigation, cover cropping, shoot thinning and cluster removal. The vineyard consists of a distinct and exceptional soil that was recognised by the US Geological survey in 1946. The "Lockwood Shaly Loam" is comprised of crushed fossilised seashells, similar to chalk and limestone and is only found in two small areas of Central California, adding an exclusive character to the premium wines.
The grapes underwent a three day cold soak, followed by a 14 day fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel. Following the fermentation it was left on the skins for an additional five days, extracting the pure fruit characteristics of the Pinot Noir variety. 10% of the wine was then matured in new French oak barrels for 10 to 12 months, adding a touch of oak influence to the final blend.
Rich, ruby red in colour with the aromas of dark cherry, strawberry and cinnamon spice. On the palate, bright red fruit and a touch of oak combine with cinnamon to form a complex, well structured Pinot Noir with a deliciously long finish.
Serve slightly chilled at 14 to 15°C, pairs well with chargrilled chicken, duck or a succulent joint of oven roasted beef.
