Producer Note
Ventolera is an exciting new venture between founder, Vicente Izquierdo and one of Chile's top winemakers Stefano Gandolini. The vineyards, which were planted in 1999, are located in the cool climate region of the Leyda Valley, just six miles from the Pacific Ocean. The area is being singled out as being Chile's newest and most radical cool climate wine region, which is strongly influenced by the cooling effects of the Humboldt Current that flows up from the Antarctic. These cooling influences are instrumental in producing wonderfully elegant wines.
Vineyard
Vertical shoot positioning. Canopy management with 18 shoots per metre to protect fruit exposure (less than 15%) and enhance freshness. Two bunches per shoot. They pick grapes from 2 blocks that were planted in 1999 and 2002. The vine rows with South East orientation is block 1 (clone 242). Then with a North East orientation is block 20 (clone 242).
Winemaking
The fruit for this Pinot Noir comes from the most granitic soils in the property. All grapes were hand picked in 12 kg bins, during the first week of April. The harvest of each sector was done according to the taste of the grapes and the physiological ripeness. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, they were cooled down for 12 hours before going to the selection table. After two selection tables, they were de-steemed and then went immediately to the fermenting tanks. All fruit went as whole grain. After this, a cold maceration process begun for 8 days, on a very reductive environment. Fermentation took place at 28-29 Celsius during 6 days. Finally, the wine was racked in new French oak barrels for 7 to 8 months.
