Producer NoteSamantha O'Keefe left California with dreams of starting a family and finding paradise. Tucked into the foothills of a dramatic mountain range at the bottom of Africa, Lismore Estate Vineyards was born alongside her nascent family. A passionate vision, combined with vines planted at 300 metres, which are chilled by winter snow and nourished by the African summer sun, produces classic, cool climate wines which are rich, complex and lovingly hand crafted.
Vineyard50% of the grapes came from Stanford and 50% from Kaaimansgat, in the subregion of Overberg. The vines are all Burgundian, clone 115. The Stanford vineyard is close to the southernmost tip of Africa and is located in one of South Africa’s coolest wine producing regions. The vineyard enjoys a long ripening season, as a result of the strong cooling winds that are prevalent in the summer. This microclimate is ideal for creating a long hang time, concentrating the flavours in the berries, while retaining natural acidity levels. Kaaimansgat is situated near the town of Villiersdorp at 700 metres above sea level. The vines here produce fleshier fruit, adding weight to the final blend.
WinemakingThe grapes were harvested once they had reached the optimal level of maturity and were carefully sorted. They were fermented in 5,000 litre tanks, with 10% left as whole bunches. The wine was then matured in a combination of older 225 litre barriques and new 500 litre barrels for 10 months. The wine was bottled without any fining or filtration.
Tasting NoteA vibrant and elegant Burgundian style Pinot Noir with striking purity of fruit and attractive aromas of sour cherry, sweet spice and a touch of cherry blossom. Brightacidity and enticing red berry fruit with forest floor notes and a soft, linear finish.
Serving SuggestionA wonderful pairing with spring lamb, duck, game dishes or a mushroom risotto.
