Raymond Vineyards, founded in 1970, is one of the Napa Valley’s pioneering estates. The Raymond family arrived in Napa in 1933 and have become deeply connected to the valley’s winemaking origins. In 1970, they established a 36 hectare estate in Rutherford, which now comprises 121 hectares in Rutherford, St. Helena and Jameson Canyon. Raymond’s Rutherford and St. Helena estate vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic; and 100% of the winery’s power comes from renewable solar energy. Five generations of the Raymond family have created a Napa icon, with an enduring reputation for elegant wines with a beautiful balance of finesse, opulence and complexity.
The 2016 vintage across California was a near-perfect growing season. A mild winter and spring led to a steady mild July and August, followed by warm days at the end of the season for the optimum ripeness. With warm days and cool nights in the summer, the ideal balance between acidity and concentrated fruit flavours was achieved.
The grapes are sourced from vineyards in Napa Valley, Sonoma and Lake County, which combine to create a distinctive flavour profile reflecting the characteristics of each of the unique appellations. The fruit from each location lends its individual character to the final blend: the Napa Valley lends the backbone, along with dark fruits and integrated tannins; the Sonoma County fog's influence imparts structure, balance and acidity; and the Lake County's short growing season yields jammy red fruits.
The grapes were carefully sorted, prior to traditional vinification methods in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then aged in a combination of temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels, imparting a touch of oak spice and complexity to the final blend.
This wine opens with rich aromas of black tea and tobacco and a hint of minerality. Jammy flavours of cherry, mulberry and plum are balanced by an earthy characteristic. This soft, approachable wine has a plush mid-palate and a lingering finish.
An ideal match for seared steak, gourmet burgers or grilled lamb. Also a treat with a beef stir-fry with fresh ginger.
