Producer Note
Nestled in the foothills of the Mont Ventoux, on the Princes of Orange route, is the Domaine de Champ-Long. The sheltered and exceptionally sunny estate covers 30 hectares, straddling the Ventoux and Côtes du Rhône appellations. An exceptional diversity of terroirs contributes to the complexity of these fine wines, which are vinified using methods that fuse traditional skills with modern technology. Owners Béatrice, Christian and Jean-Christophe Gely cultivate their passion for wine in this beautiful countryside, on the estate which has belonged to the family since 1820.
Vineyard
Ventoux wines benefit from an unspoilt natural environment of exceptional biodiversity and the vineyard at Domaine Champ-Long is no exception. The vines age from 25 to 45 years and are low yielding producing 35 hectolitres per hectare. The soils are made up of pebbly limestone and clay. The vineyard faces south west and is cultivated according to traditional methods, with the utmost respect for the environment. Organic fertilisers are applied and the grapes are manually harvested at optimum maturity levels.
Winemaking
The grapes were de-stemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation took place at controlled temperatures of 24°C in concrete vats with racking and daily pump overs to ensure the optimal levels of colour and flavour extraction, while also imparting structure to the wine. One third of the wine was aged in four year old 400 litre French oak barrels for 18 months; the remainder was aged in concrete vats to retain the purity of fruit and the nuances of the terroir.
Tasting Note
Deep luscious aromas of blackcurrants and dark cherry are accompanied by delicate spicy notes on the nose. Round and beautifully structured with supple tannins and a long, satisfying finish.
