The Bouzereau family has been growing vines in Meursault for nine generations, dating back to the 18th century. The current Château de Cîteaux was established by Philippe Bouzereau (senior) in the 1960s. His son Philippe (junior) took over the running of the estate in 2006, having completed his studies in Beaune and worked vintages in Beaujolais, Australia and New Zealand. The 18 hectares of vines are cultivated according to the principles of la ‘Lutte Raisonnée’, or sustainable farming. Philippe passionately believes in letting the wine express its terroir, through minimum intervention in the winery and a judicious use of oak. He has certainly achieved this, as the resulting wines are rich, concentrated and showcase the terroir beautifully.
In 2016, the climatic conditions were rather complicated due to significant frost in the region. Due to negative temperatures, some of the Château de Cîteaux the spring buds were badly damaged, considerably reducing the yield. 2016 produced a small harvest of just 12 hectolitres per hectare, but the remaining fruit produced wines of great concentration and opulence.
Auxey-Duresses AOC is located in a valley in the Côte de Beaune, west of Meursault. There are nine Premier Cru sites within the AOC and “Les Duresses” is arguably the most famous of the nine. The vineyard sits on the south eastern sloping hillside of the Montagne du Bourdon. The soil is rich in clay at the bottom, with the presence of white marl at the top. The vineyard is managed using sustainable practices; only organic fertilisers and composts are used and chemical herbicides have not been used for over 15 years. The vineyard is cultivated in the traditional Burgundian manner.
The grapes were hand harvested at optimal maturity and carefully sorted. They underwent 25 days of vinification, including 12 days of pre-fermentation maceration in a temperature controlled vat at 12°C. During fermentation, the cap was regularly punched down and the must was pumped over to ensure the desired levels of extraction and aeration were achieved. The wine was aged for 15 months in oak barrels in the family cellars. 20 to 30% of the oak was new. The use of oak was carefully monitored to ensure the terroir of this 1er Cru site “ Les Duresses” was captured. Lightly clarified prior to bottling.
This Premier Cru showcases a beautiful Pinot Noir expression with ripe black fruits, peppery hints and a touch of violet on the nose. The fleshy and harmoniously balanced palate is round and silky with rich, concentrated flavours and a long finish.
