Bolney's story began when founders Rodney and Janet Pratt planted three acres of vines, five decades ago, to create what was then one of the very first commercial vineyards in England. In the 1990s, Sam Linter, their daughter, joined them and grew the vineyard’s acreage and the quality of the wines. Sam continues to run the operation as Managing Director and Head Winemaker. Winemakers Liz Morgan and Alex Rabagliati produce elegant, artisanal wines, which beautifully showcase the Sussex terroir. In 2017 they were awarded the prestigious accolade of 'UK Winery of the Year' at the UK Wine Awards.
The site is 15 miles from the south coast in the heart of West Sussex, with views of the South Downs. The vines are planted on gentle slopes of sandstone, which aids drainage and provides good mineral pick up for the two vineyard sites of Foxhole and Pookchurch. The vines are trained with high sylvos trellising. The shoots grow downwards and the fruiting zones are high in order to reduce predation by Roe Deer. This trellising method also allows breezes to enter the canopy, reducing humidity inside the canopy, which helps to fight against mildew.
The hand-picked Bacchus was whole bunch pressed. Cool fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks lasting for approximately 14 days to ensure the retention of the primary fruit aromas including fresh lime. The wine was made in an unoaked style.
Showing all the hallmarks of a classic Bacchus with delicate aromas of elderﬂower, gooseberry and English hedgerow characters. Beautifully balanced, it delights the palate with mineral notes through to a long ﬁnish that draws out sweet pineapple and grapefruit.
A light, fresh apéritif, it also accompanies white fish - fish & chips, lemon sole or hard cheese such as Cheddar.
