Tasting Note

Intense aromas of ripe blackberries and ripe red fruits are enhanced by subtle herbal notes of rosemary and tertiary complexity of fine oak, with hints of spice and cloves. Full-bodied, with a beautiful texture of muscular, but velvety, finely-knit tannins. Very concentrated, yet vibrant and fresh, with great length and precision.

Producer Note

Quinta de Quercus is a 44 hectare estate located in the DO Uclés. The estate is situated at 800 metres above sea level in an area of outstanding natural beauty, in the heart of Castile. This contemporary Spanish producer produces exquisite single vineyard and single varietal wines from parcels of low yielding 30 year old Tempranillo vines. The vineyard is cultivated according to sustainable practices and respects the biodiversity of the estate. Winemakers Tao Platón and Sam Harrop hand craft perfectly balanced wines which are elegant and terroir driven, while showing depth, complexity and a great capacity to age.

Vineyard

The grapes are grown in a single parcel called Viña Ocaña, which is the oldest vineyard plot on the Quinta de Quercus estate. Situated at 800 metres above sea level, the altitude imparts a distinct freshness to the wines. The warm days are tempered by cool nights and this temperature difference helps to retain the acidity in the grapes balancing the concentrated flavours. The vineyard is gently sloping and the old low yielding Tempranillo vines are planted in chalky soils. The vines are sustainably cultivated and the grapes are hand-picked when they have reached optimum maturity.

Winemaking

There is no predetermined formula for making Quinta de Quercus, the wine is individually tailored to the characteristics of the vintage. For the 2014 vintage, the grapes were fermented in small temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The temperature and length of fermentation, along with the number of pump-overs varied according to each tank, as did the length of the post fermentation maceration. This particular vintage was aged for 12 months in 300 litre French and 225 litre American oak barrels, of which 30% were new.
