Producer Note

CastelGiocondo epitomises the spirit of Montalcino. It is considered to be one of the most historical estates of Montalcino, as it was one of the first producers of Brunello di Montalcino during the 1800s. The vines are overlooked by the castle and the small medieval town of Montalcino. The combination of the unique location of the vineyard, which is situated at 300 to 400 metres altitude; the south western orientation, which benefits from the warming afternoon sun; and the free draining marl soil culminates to produce this top quality Sangiovese. The CastelGiocondo wines are distinguished by their opulence, power and extraordinary longevity.

Summer 2012 was hot and dry but the vines were sustained through the growth cycle by healthy levels of water in the schist and clay Galestro sub-soil. The véraison phase took place in optimal conditions and completed fully and evenly. The vines’ deep roots enabled a gentle, complete maturation of the grapes, yielding grapes perfectly expressive of the aromas and flavours to be found in the finest quality Sangiovese.

The grapes come from an eight hectare single vineyard called "Ripe al Convento", situated at the highest point of the Tenuta CastelGiocondo estate. The vines have an average age of 25 years and are grown at 350 to 450 metres above sea-level. They are planted at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare with a southerly exposure and are low-trained on a spurred cordon system. There are two types of soil on the estate; the first is rich in sand with a high presence of calcium, while the second is calcareous, rich in both clay and calcium with a more alkaline pH.

The grapes were hand harvested with cluster selection and pressed using a soft horizontal press. Fermentation took place in stainless steel at 30°C and lasted 10 days, with maceration lasting 33 days. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation. It was matured for five years prior to its release - by law a minimum of two years in oak and six months in bottle. Slavonian oak casks and French oak barrels were used for the maturation of the wine.

Tasting Note

A complex bouquet of red and black berries, damson, blackcurrant complemented by mineral notes and hints of spice. Ripe al Convento is opulent and smooth on the palate, with rich, elegant tannins and indulgent notes of coffee and tobacco. The finish is almost endless, a treat for the senses.

Serving Suggestion

A great match for rich stews, slow-cooked meats or fine, aged cheeses.
