A classic and classy white Burgundy, revealing rich exotic fruit aromas with delicate hints of spice. Beautifully balanced and intense with a creamy texture through to a long, fresh and almost saline finish.
Gouffier owns five and a half hectares of vineyard in the villages of Fontaines and Mercurey in Côte Chalonnaise. Historically it was run by the Gouffier family for generations until Jerome Gouffier handed over the reins to his close friend Frédéric Gueugneau, formerly at La Chablisienne. Since 2011, Frédéric and oenologist Benoît Pagot have brought about a new style of winemaking. They follow an organic philosophy to create wines that are modern and approachable, but with all the style and panache of good Burgundy. They have created a collection of wines of outstanding originality, verve and spirit.
A wet winter and spring built soil water reserves which was important for the forthcoming growing season. A cold snap in February allowed the vines to rest and the sap to descend. Warm weather in April increased the vine's development, which continued throughout the hot, dry growing season. Harvest took place under good conditions producing exceptionally healthy fruit. 2018 is an excellent vintage for both quantity and quality.
The Chardonnay grapes come from a parcel of vines planted in silty, clayey soils, which have excellent water retention properties, nourishing the vines during the warm summers. The vines are carefully managed to ensure optimal conditions for healthy, mature grapes at harvest time; with strict de-suckering, leaf thinning and ploughing of the soil. The vines are pruned according to the Guyot Poussard method, which respects the sap-flow of the vine, reducing the serious consequences of pruning cuts and optimises the vine’s health. The vineyards are managed respecting the environment and the biodiversity of the vineyard. The grapes are hand-picked at optimal maturity.
The wine pays tribute to Mademoiselle Madeleine Gouffier, often called ‘Coco’ who ran the Domaine Gouffier for nearly 50 years. The wine was matured in French oak barrels of 228 litres for 12 months, of which 20% were new oak.
