Piedra Blanca Verdejo 2013

The White Stone vineyard belongs to a grower from the village Pozal de las Gallinas in the area Cerrellal. Situated at 809 meters above sea level it is arguably the highest vineyard in DO Rueda. In 1968 the grapes were purchased for the first time by the Lorenzo Cachazo family in Pozaldez where they were used to
make a sherry type wine – this was possible as this vineyard ripened later than others and the grapes reached higher alcohol levels but maintained natural acidity.45 years later we have decided to recognize this remarkable vineyard by making this a limited edition wine whose freshness and minerality reflects
this unique terroir of stone, age and altitude.

CLIMATE

The climate is continental (long hot summers, cold winters) with certain Atlantic maritime influences. Temperatures vary widely and can drop below zero in winter (-1°C) and can reach 30°C in summer, which is not as high as similar wine-producing regions in southern Central Spain. There is a risk of frost, freezing fog, high winds and hailstones in winter/spring. On the other hand there is only a very small possibility of drought. Normally it rains in spring and autumn, with an average rainfall of 400 mm/year, while the vines receive 2,700 hours of sunlight per year.

SOIL TYPE

White alluvial stones on top of gravel top soil.

VINES

Single vineyard planted in 1967 - 809 metres above sea level.

ELABORATION

Grapes are harvested by hand using boxes of 25 kgs. Upon entering the winery the grapes undergo a light pressing and then 20% of the must is separated into new French barriques for fermentation and a further 3 months ageing. The remaining must undergoes temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks and then is kept in contact with its fine lees for a further 3 months. The two wines are then blended before bottling.

OAK

20% is fermented in new French oak and a further 3 months ageing.

TASTING NOTE

A bright straw green colour, the nose reveals intense grassiness combined with green fruits and a hint of tropical exuberance. The palate has marked nervous
acidity, is medium bodied and finishes with a touch of bitterness.
