Tasting Note

Lively wild flower aromatics, with stylishly restrained flavours of ripe yellow stonefruits and gooseberries through to a fine, dry, mineral texture with succulent acidity. A wine with a lingering refined elegance.

Producer Note

Mahana embrace certified organic viticulture and minimal input winemaking in their gravity flow winery. A genuine expression of site and season, the wines reflect the artisans who nurture them. The vineyards in the Moutere Hills and the Waimea Plains of Nelson make dynamic, uncompromising wines ushered by the expertise of winemaker, Michael Glover, considered to be one of the top 12 winemakers in Australasia.


The grapes are grown in organic vineyards located in Mahana's Burkes Bank vineyard, near the Waimea river. The soils are free draining Waimea alluvial gravels. The vines are planted with a density of 2,800 vines per hectare from Selection Massale clones. The vines were carefully managed through pruning, trimming and leaf plucking by hand to ensure open healthy leaf canopies were maintained and the crop level per vine was in balance with its ability to yield premium quality fruit. This resulted in a yield of eight tonnes per hectare. The harvest took place between the 3rd- 12th April 2014.


Selected parcels are machine harvested into individual one tonne insulated bins. A long gentle pressing is followed by minimal settling. 80% fermented in stainless steel, 20% fermented in very old French oak. All yeasts are cultured from the individual vineyard blocks. Elevage on the original yeast lees, helps to naturally stabilise and increase textural weight. No fining and minimal filtration. Estate bottled by gravity, followed by bottle maturation before Spring release.

Pair with pan fried snapper, tea-smoked salmon, pork and fennel sausage ragu or a simple classic Caesar salad.
