In 2007 this wine's name changed from TOKAY PINOT GRIS to just PINOT GRIS. The name TOKAY appeared in Alsace in the 16th century. According to the legend, the grape had been introduced from Hungary by General Lazare de Schwendi following a campaign against the Turks when he took the city of Tokay in 1565 and seized 4000 barrels of the famous TOKAY wine. He was said to have later planted the grape on his estates in Alsace. In reality the Pinot Gris grape could well have come from Burgundy where it still exists under the name PINOT BEUROT. Nowadays PINOT GRIS accounts for 14% in the Alsace vineyards.
