Bodegas El Grifo 'El Grifo' Malvasia Seco Colección 2017, Lanzarote

Tasting Note

A clean, bright and vibrant wine beautifully showcasing the varietal characteristics of jasmine and orange blossom, with underlying notes of apricot and peach. Fresh and vivacious on the palate yet harmoniously balanced, it offers a long, smooth and persistent finish.

Producer Note

Bodegas El Grifo has an unparalleled history, being the oldest winery in the Canary Islands. The family estate was established in 1775 on the beautiful, volcanic island of Lanzarote and is currently owned by the fifth generation brothers Juan José and Fermín Otamendi Rodríguez-Bethencourt. The vineyard covers 61 hectares of pre-phylloxera vines. Situated at 28° latitude, the vines are cultivated against the odds, as they are exposed to constant trade winds and hot, arid conditions; but with meticulous attention in the vineyard and winery, Bodegas El Grifo culminates its years of experience to produce authentic wines of outstanding quality.

Vintage

The 2017 vintage was characterised by the high rainfall, which is extremely beneficial for the dry, hot island of Lanzarote. The ambient temperatures during the ripening period, resulted in healthy grapes of good quality.

Vineyard

The vines are grown in more than 600 micro-plots in different areas of the island of Lanzarote, with altitudes ranging from 200 to 500 metres above sea level. The soils differ in each plot, but they are predominantly even deep red soils on ancient basaltic formations. The soils have fossilised elements, covered by more recent volcanic eruptions or colluvial deposits, and are rich in mineral content. The vines are cultivated in the traditional manner are protected from the constant trade winds by stone walls. The Gobelet trained vines are irrigated by the rain and are low yielding.

Winemaking

The grapes were carefully selected und underwent a light maceration on the skins before being pressed. A cool sedimentation took place prior to fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged in stainless steel for a period of three to four months, in order to preserve the pure fruit and varietal characteristics of the Malvasia Volcánica variety.
