Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Barberini 2010, Domaine de la Solitude, Rhône Valley

Tasting Note

The nose is complex showing aromas of flowers from the vines combined with honey and with a hint of subtle wood which is very well integrated. The palate is rich and elegant, with notes of violet flowers combined with fresh minerality and finishing very long.

Producer Note

The property has a glorious past. Wines have been made at this place for several hundred years. Often the owners have had connection to the church. The three hats on the label refer to two bishops and a pope among the forefathers of the Lancon family. The first member of the family in France came from Italy in 1264 to serve the pope in Avignon. His name was Barberini - the name today of the special cuvées from the domain. Today the sons of Pierre Lancon, Jean and Michel Lancon, are in charge at the domain and Florent, Michel's son is responsible for the winemaking. The domain owns 38 ha. AOC Chateauneuf du Pape.

After sorting, the grapes are gently pressed in the style used for making Champagne, with the aid of pneumatic presses. Fermentation at 20°C in new barrels for the Roussanne, in vats for the Clairette. The malolactic fermentation is prevented for this wine.

Serving Suggestion

With creamy fish dishes or risotto.

Roussanne 85%, Clairette 15%
