Tasting Note
An elegant wine with aromas of ripe fruits combined with a complex melody of balsamic, rose, orange blossom, eucalyptus and delicate toasted notes. Smooth on the palate with a voluminous texture and a refreshing citrus finish.
Producer Note
Bodegas El Grifo has an unparalleled history, being the oldest winery in the Canary Islands. The family estate was established in 1775 on the beautiful, volcanic island of Lanzarote and is currently owned by the fifth generation brothers Juan José and Fermín Otamendi Rodríguez-Bethencourt. The vineyard covers 61 hectares of pre-phylloxera vines. Situated at 28° latitude, the vines are cultivated against the odds, as they are exposed to constant trade winds and hot, arid conditions; but with meticulous attention in the vineyard and winery, Bodegas El Grifo culminates its years of experience to produce authentic wines of outstanding quality.
Vintage
The 2015 vintage saw high rainfall and fresh weather during the ripening season, resulting in a wine with great ageing potential.
Vineyard
The vines are grown in more than 600 micro-plots in different areas of the island of Lanzarote, with altitudes ranging from 200 to 500 metres above sea level. The soils differ in each plot, but they are predominantly even deep red soils on ancient basaltic formations. The soils have fossilised elements, covered by more recent volcanic eruptions or colluvial deposits, and are rich in mineral content. The vines are cultivated in the traditional manner are protected from the constant trade winds by stone walls. The Gobelet trained vines are irrigated by the rain and are low yielding.
Winemaking
The grapes were carefully selected and underwent a light maceration on the skins before being pressed. A cool sedimentation took place prior to fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The fermenting must was transferred to 500 litre French oak barrels to finish fermentation. The wine rested on its lees for three months in barrel, before being transferred to tank for a further 12 months with daily bâtonnage. The wine was lightly clarified and filtered.
