Catar 2009

The story of Bodegas Pinord started more than 150 years ago, when the Tetas family began to make wines on their estate at Sant Cugat Sesgarrigues from grapes they grew themselves and vinified in the traditional way. Since then, the wines produced by the family have been growing in prestige and the family name has become inseparably linked to the name of Penedés wine. In 1942 José Maria Tetas established the existing wine cellars at Vilafranca del Penedés, only 4 km from the original estate. At the present time, Pinord has facilities that can produce more than five million bottles a year, whilst retaining the family integrity and quality standards for which they have become well-known in the area. Today, two generations work together in the family business.

More recently Pinord have established themselves in Priorat and Montsant and the popularity of these new wines is growing all the time.

Grape varieties:          60% Garnacha, 20% Cariñena, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot

Vineyards:                   Garnacha vines (8-40 years old) from different parts of the valley. The soil in the lower vineyards is alluvial while the higher vineyards and all terraces and slopes are on poor, mineral, stony soil based with some granite and slate.  The altitude is 150-450m.

Harvest/Selection:      Manual harvest lasts from early September until mid October

Yield:                           1kg -1,5kg per vine,

                                    40-50hl per ha

Vinification:                 Temperature controlled fermentation (24-28ºC), varieties were vinified separately in stainless steel tanks with the maceration lasting 6-8 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in the tank, then it is cold stabilized, with a light filtration and soft fining before bottling. Ageing / maturation process.  Aged for 3 months in American and French oak barrels.

Analysis:                  13.3 % vol. Alcohol

Tasting note:            Medium ruby with flecks of violet.  The aroma shows some cherries, and spicy cake; ripe and nicely concentrated.  It shows a lot of Garnacha in its character.  It displays good fruit, with a medium finish with ripe, sweet tannins and a pleasing freshness on the finish.
