Following a Royal visit in 2015 by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, we have brought in the Pinot Noir Rosé, which was HRH's favourite wine during the tour. The wine has a stunningly brilliant ruby-red colour. The nose bursts with red berries which follows through onto a textured palate of strawberry and raspberry. It is vibrant, fresh and intense, with a bone dry, lingering finish. This is about as "serious" as Rosé gets and it really demands food.
Mahana embrace certified organic viticulture and minimal input winemaking in their gravity flow winery. A genuine expression of site and season, the wines reflect the artisans who nurture them. The vineyards in the Moutere Hills and the Waimea Plains of Nelson make dynamic, uncompromising wines ushered by the expertise of winemaker, Michael Glover, considered to be one of the top 12 winemakers in Australasia.
The Mahana Nelson vineyard is north facing and has a planting density of 2,840 vines per hectare. The clones used are 114 and 777. Specific vineyard blocks are selected, dry grown and carefully managed to produce vibrant, early ripening fruit. The clay-bound gravels impart a fine, textural complexity to the wine.
The grapes were picked by hand and were then given five days maceration as whole bunches, which facilitated the beginnings of the carbonic maceration process. Following pressing, half the wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts in old French barriques, whilst the other half was fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wines were blended and bottled in September, almost six months after harvest.
A very versatile food wine, perfect with traditional rich salads, paella, smoked salmon, mezze and barbecued food.
