Carpineto was founded in 1967 by Antonio Zaccheo and Giovanni Sacchet and farms 424hectares of land spread over four estates among Tuscany's most prestigious appellations. The wines include: Dogajolo, Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile, Farnito and the Appodiati Single Vineyard Collection, complemented by single grove olive oils.
Carpineto has been named IWSC Italian Wine Producer Of The Year in 2003 and was the first ever Italian winery ever to win the IWSC International Winemaker Of The Year Trophy in 1994.
Antonio Zaccheo is now aided by his son Antonio and daughter, Francesca who both previously worked in the wine trade in the USA. Giovanni Sacchet's daughter, Caterina, is studying to become a wine maker.
The Carpineto wine making style produces wines that are full-bodied, complex and fruity in character, with a round, supple tannin structure and a long, persistent finish.
MONTEPULCIANOAmong the rolling hills of the Vino Nobile Region of Tuscany, lie 100 hectares of vineyards planted with new clones of Sangiovese and other international varieties on modern rootstocks dedicated to Carpineto's Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Single Vineyards Programme (Appodiati). Planting density reaches 8,500 vines per hectare for many sites.On the Estate, there is also an old farmhouse complex, complete with Vinification and ageing cellars, in which the Vino Nobile and Single Vineyard wines are produced. Cellar capacity is approximately 3,500 HL of wood cooperage, mostly oval Slovenian oak casks and traditional barrels, in addition to the more modern stainless steel tanks. A new winery with additional ageing cellars has just been constructed.In addition to the classic Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva, Carpineto produces single estate wines of great power, concentration and finesse. As with any top quality wine, they are produced in limited quantities only
Grapes: 90% Sangiovese Grosso (Prugnolo Gentile) and 10% Canaiolo Nero. The vineyards are situated on South South-Eastern slopes with excellent sun exposure.
Vinification: Maceration of the skins with the must for 10-15 days at 25-30C. The frequent pump-overs are accomplished using special pumps designed to move solid parts (skins and seeds) very gently.
Ageing: 2 years in large 5,500 L Slavonian oval oak barrels with a small part in French oak barrels. After bottling the wine is aged in Carpineto's temperature controlled cellars for at least 12 months prior to release.
Note: In order to deliver the highest quality, Carpineto has chosen to age this wine one year longer than the 3 years required by the appellation rules for a Riserva wine.Colour: Brilliant ruby red tending to garnet with age.
Serve: At 19C, decanting before pouring, with game, stews and mature cheese.
Taste: Mature flavours with earthy and dark liquorice tones, smooth palate with lovely weight and an elegant, long finish.
