A pure style with an abundance of violet aromas, layered with notes of blackcurrant, white pepper and a hint of graphite. Full bodied with vibrant fruit flavours that intermingle with velvety tannins and a racy mineral finish.
Ventolera is an exciting new venture between founder, Vicente Izquierdo and one of Chile's top winemakers Stefano Gandolini. The vineyards, which were planted in 1999, are located in the cool climate region of the Leyda Valley, just six miles from the Pacific Ocean. The area is being singled out as being Chile's newest and most radical cool climate wine region, which is strongly influenced by the cooling effects of the Humboldt Current that flows up from the Antarctic. These cooling influences are instrumental in producing wonderfully elegant wines.
The proximity of the vineyard to the sea ensures a wonderfully cooling summer breeze that whips across the vineyards every day from 12pm to 4pm, moderating temperatures. This factor combined with a high humidity level of 50%, enhances the fruit flavours. The soils are granitic and alluvial. The vines are trained using the Vertical Shoot Positioning method and are subjected to strict water controls to moderate vigour and produce small, concentrated berries. The vines yield an average of four tonnes per hectare.
The grapes were hand picked into 12kg boxes and taken immediately to the winery. After a temperature controlled fermentation, the wine spent nine months ageing in new French oak barrels. The wine was unfined and unfiltered.
This cool climate Syrah works well with grilled lamb, lightly spiced red meats or a marianted and grilled aubegine bake.
