Producer Note
What a great concept - a Tour of the South of France - get out the vélo and let's join the touriste-routiers. But why be part of the peloton when you can attack from the front, and make wine which really matters and offer wine lovers liberté de choix? Hence, among the delights on offer here is a beautiful Picpoul de Pinet - the fish wine - a vivacious Grenache Blanc/Sauvignon Blanc blend and a quite beautiful and unusual Grenache/ Pinot Noir blend.
Vintage
2017 was a great vintage. High sunshine hours and warm, dry conditions during the ripening period, resulted in grapes with good maturity levels. The wines show good fruit concentration, with beautiful balance and velvety tannins.
Vineyard
During the sourcing of the Tournée du Sud wines in the spring and autumn of 2014, the Malbec proved particularly elusive, with some examples proving to be too rustic for the UK. Thankfully, Beverly Tabbron MW managed to find a supplier as we approached launch date and the rest as they say is history, with each subsequent vintage being as delicious as the first.
Winemaking
Known as Cot in Bordeaux, the Malbec grapes were cool fermented in concrete tanks with the vinification temperatures carefully monitored. Traditional maceration lasted 15 days. 10% of the wine was aged with oak for added complexity.
Tasting Note
This elegant, ruby coloured wine boasts richly spiced aromas, with hints of liquorice enveloped in red and black fruit flavours. It is soft and well-structured on the palate with bright fruity flavours and fine tannins that give this wine its elegant length.
Serving Suggestion
A wonderful red to accompany a braised lamb shank or an entrecôte steak.
