This 160-hectare property has been owned by the Guedes family since 1996.
It is situated in the southern part of the Alentejo, on the limestone soils of Vidígueira. As this is the warmest part of the region, it has 152 hectares of red varieties (Aragonês, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, Periquita, Moreto and Touriga Nacional) and only eight hectares of white grapes (Antão Vaz and Arinto). Vineyards
Herdade do Peso’s sustainably-farmed vineyard is located in Pedrogão within the Vidígueira commune, where the climate is warm and sunny with little rainfall. The property includes a dam, which occupies 20 hectares and provides much-needed water to irrigate the vineyard. The soils here are mainly limestone. After ripening assessments, the grapes were harvested separately at their optimum point of aromatic and acidic ripeness.
Vintage Information
The 2015 growing year started with a lot of rain, evolving into a dry and cold winter. Spring was drier than in previous years, with some occasional rain having helped in the healthy development of the vine. Summer was marked by hot, dry weather. The typical cool nights of the Vidígueira region were slow to arrive, which meant a more thorough job of selecting the fruit was required to avoid overripe fruit at harvest. This resulted in wines that retained freshness and balance.
Vinification
Following full de-stemming and gentle crushing, maceration and fermentation took place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 26ºC over a period of around eight days. When the intended organoleptic balance was reached, the wine was gently pressed. After malolactic fermentation, the wine aged in second, third and fourth year French and Caucasian oak barrels for around six months. It underwent a light fining and filtering before bottling.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby red in colour. On the nose, generous aromas of strawberries and red cherries stand out, with spicy complexity coming from oak ageing. It is vibrant and supple on the palate with elegant tannins, delicately balanced acidity and a long finish. A real winner.
