In 1962, 19 vine growers from San Marzano whose families had farmed the land for generations, combined their efforts to establish 'Cantine San Marzano'. Through the decades this cooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 vine growers. Using modern and technologically advanced vinification techniques they produce elegant wines that pay homage to the ancient Apulian wine traditions. The fusion of time honoured tradition, passion and contemporary techniques, enables this winery to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characteristics while reflecting the local terroir. In the Sommelier Wine Awards, San Marzano was awarded European Producer of the Year 2017.
A mild, temperate spring was followed by a very hot and dry summer which kept the vineyard healthy and resulted in excellent maturation of the berries. The warm conditions resulted in an early harvest during the beginning of August. The total production in 2017 was smaller than the previous year, however it was characterised by high quality grapes with concentrated fruit flavours and excellent sugar and polyphenolic levels.
The vineyard area is approximately 100 metres above sea level, with high average temperatures and medium to low rainfall, providing excellent conditions for grape production. The soft soil layer is clayey and quite thin, with a good presence of rocks for drainage. Harvest takes place during the first few weeks of September.
A temperature controlled maceration took place for approximately 10 days, followed by alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts. The wine was aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of fruit.
A deep ruby red with violet reflections and intense aromas of blackcurrants and wild fruits, complemented by subtle notes of spice and thyme. A full-bodied wine, which is charmingly balanced, soft on the palate and full of the flavours of Southern Italy.
An ideal accompaniment to savoury first courses, grilled red meat, game and mature cheese.
