Pavillon de Poyferré 2013, Saint Julien

Tasting Note

A fantastic wine from parcels of younger vines at Château Léoville Poyferré. It opens with expressive aromas of blackberry and dark cherry followed by spices, violets, graphite and hints of earthiness. The palate is plush with even more dark fruits, spices and woody notes. The finish is long and polished.

Producer Note

Originally called Mont-Moytié after the first owner, Jean de Moytié, the estate changed name when the domaine fell to the Maison de Gascq by marriage in 1740. Under Alexandre de Gascq the domain became the biggest in the Médoc, reaching around 120 hectares. The estate has been owned by the Cuvelier family since 1979. The ownership has hailed a new era for the success of the domain and the restoration of Léoville Poyferré to its rightful rank among the great Médoc wines. The hallmarks of the wines are balance, finesse and elegance.

Vineyard

Soil analysis to monitor the health of the soil. Ploughing after harvest to stimulate the soil and improve soil aeration and encourage the roots to feed deeper. Double Guyot trained vines between 17 to 20 years old with three buds per branch. Thinning out, de-suckering, de-budding and de-leafing.

Winemaking

The bunches are sorted by hand before de-stemming. They are then sorted for a second time mechanically and manually before crushing. Each plot and grape variety is fermented separately in stainless steel vats. Short and frequent pump overs, adapted to the character of each plot. Maceration lasts four weeks. Aged in barrels that have been used for one or two vintages for between 18 and 20 months. Fining with egg white.

Serving Suggestion

Roast red meats such as lamb and marinated ribs.
