Oveja Negra Single Vineyard Carignan 2013

Oveja Negra Single Vineyard Carignan comes from 40 year old vines from Plot N°8 in the old dry farmed vineyards in the interior of the Maule Valley. This region is known for its tremendous geographic diversity and Mediterranean climate with well-defined seasons throughout the year. The summer is warm and dry with temperatures that reach 33°C (91°F) and an average maximum temperature during the month of January of 30.8°C (87°F). Average low temperatures during the summer do not drop below 8°C (46°F), and the average low temperature during January is 12°C (54°F). The San Rafael sector presents significant daily temperature oscillation during the summer and averages 18°C (32°F) in January, which encourages the bunches to ripen slowly and evenly. The absence of rainfall during the summer and early autumn also helps maintain healthy conditions. The winter in San Rafael is cold and rainy, with high temperatures that do not surpass 16°C (61°F) and low temperatures that rarely drop below 3°C (37°F).

The grapes that go into this Carignan come from old dry-farmed bush (head-trained) vines. Due to the high temperatures and lack of available water, no foliage management techniques are used in order to protect the bunches from dehydration. The crop load is thinned to 1 bunch per shoot in January, and the bunch shoulders are adjusted in February, for a final yield of 7-9 tons per hectare

Climate: Warm Mediterranean, with extended dry summers and cold, rainy winters.

Soils: marginal granitic basins with moderate fertility and low moisture.

Harvest Date: Carignan: April 10

Tasting Note: Delightful red wine with good fruit flavours which are nevertheless nicely restrained and with a wonderful clean finish.
