Olifantsberg is passionate about producing authentic wines with a true sense of place, which reflect the unique location of their vineyard. The focus is on sustainable farming and winemaking practices, resulting in limited intervention in the both the vineyard and cellar. The team are fully committed to understanding their terroir and managing their natural resources through conservation, which adds to the singularity of their wines. The unique terroir with its combination of Breede-shale, Renosterveld and sandstone soils, constant winds and elevation; produce concentrated fruit that results in elegant, fresh and age-worthy wines.
A cool winter and unusually high rainfall in spring characterised the 2014 vintage. The growers had to be extra vigilant in the vineyards in order to avoid disease and ensure even ripening. Dry, warmer conditions during January and February resulted in ripe, good quality grapes at harvest time.
The vineyard is located on the fertile slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range where they endure large diurnal temperature differences and strong winds, at altitudes from 250 to 450 metres above sea level. During the winter the mountain peaks are snow covered, keeping the vines dormant for longer. Cold winters, coupled with the summer winds, ensures the slow ripening of the grapes, helps to maintain healthy vines and contributes freshness and elegance to the wines. The soils in the vineyard comprise a unique shale, quartzite and sandstone, which lends structure to the resulting wine. The vines are cultivated in a sustainable manner and are mostly bush vines or “sur echalas". The vines are supported by a vertical wooden pole- a total of 65,000 of these wooden poles were planted to establish this system across 12 hectares. This system is appropriate for drought resistance and trellised to produce maximum complexity from the complex soils.
This handcrafted wine is based on Syrah, with small additions of bush vine Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre. Natural fermentation took place in open-top fermenters, followed by maturation in French oak foudres and barrels for a further 10 months.
Fresh, pure fruit expression is complemented by a beautiful perfume, a balanced palate and an elegant finish.
A great match for herbed rack of lamb; barbecued gourmet burgers or rich aubergine and lentil dishes.
