The Principe is a Nebbiolo that has been left to refine in large vats for a year; its organoleptic characteristics are extraordinarily classical. Highly evident is its typicality, characterised by varietal flavours and by the influence of the Barbaresco soil from where its grapes come. It is a noble wine of excellent character and pleasantness suited to medium ageing.
Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont's truly great winemakers. The family owns 60 hectares of vineyards in three of the classic growing areas - Langhe, Monferrato and Gavi and also have access to another 50 hectares through their long-term relationship with growers. Michele has insisted on total quality since his first vintage in 1956, an ethos which his sons Stefano and Alberto adopt today. The Chiarlo style is highly elegant, they make complex wines that can age for decades but above all reflect their provenance - some of the finest vineyard sites in Piedmont.
A technical staff deals with their management and has the function of scrupulously overseeing the cultivation to produce high quality wines whilst respecting the strictest ecological critieria in this sector. In particular, the following procedures are adhered to: a balanced and rigorous pruning policy, fungicide treatments with the use of products with low environmental impact; meticulous manual thinning; turfing between the rows and grape yields targeted for each vineyard according to the objectives established for each particular wine. Since the 1980's, they realized that an extraordinary increase in quality could be achieved by ensuring a reduced yield per vine.
The soil is made up of bluish-grey, sand-rich, clayey calcareous marl; it is a soil poor in organic substances but with a considerable percentage of manganese and potassium.
Matured for one year in large French oak barrels. Refining: at least 6 months in the bottle.
Potato Gnocchi with Castelmagno cheese sauce.
