The 2013 Mahana Pinot Noir is sleek and supple, taking its direction from clay bound gravels. Fermented with significant whole clusters, this offers delicate perfume, spice and finely detailed tannins.
Mahana embrace certified organic viticulture and minimal input winemaking in their gravity flow winery. A genuine expression of site and season, the wines reflect the artisans who nurture them. The vineyards in the Moutere Hills and the Waimea Plains of Nelson make dynamic, uncompromising wines ushered by the expertise of winemaker, Michael Glover, considered to be one of the top 12 winemakers in Australasia.
The rolling hills of the Upper Moutere were formed during the last ice age. Glacial melts moving across the earth left behind layers of clay-bound gravels. Mahana means "warm" in Maori and at 100 metres above sea level, its gently rolling slopes make good use of the spring sunshine, whilst catching the cooling afternoon sea breeze in midsummer. The yield is four tonnes per hectare from this unique, South-West facing plot of the Mahana vineyard. The vineyard is dry farmed.
Clusters from superior parcels of the Mahana vineyard were hand harvested. An ambient maceration of five days took place until natural fermentation commenced. 22% whole clusters were included. After 28 days maceration, the clusters were pressed immediately into very tight grained French oak barrels, 22% of which were new. Prolonged malolactic fermentation in early summer and 18 months total élevage. The wine was bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered.
Perfect gastronomic marriages include duck confit, washed rind cheese, mild game, Chinese barbequed dishes or roast lamb.
