Gérard Bertrand, 'Or & Azur' Rouge, Languedoc 2017

A fresh wine delivering layered aromas of wild strawberry and wild herbs, underlined by notes of spice and garrigue.

Producer Note

Gérard Bertrand is one of the most outstanding winemakers in the South of France, where he owns numerous estates among the most prestigious crus of Languedoc-Roussillon. Formerly the IWC Red Winemaker of the Year and Wine Enthusiast's European Winery of the Year, he is known locally as the "King" of the Languedoc. Brought up in the Languedoc vineyards, Gérard Bertrand is committed to sharing the characteristics and exceptional diversity of each of the terroirs. 20 years of expertise ensures that wines bearing Gérard Bertrand's signature have a unique style, driven by the fundamental values of excellence, authenticity, conviviality and innovation. We are proud to represent this leading French name in the UK.

Vineyard

This wine is certified organic and "Bee Friendly". The Bee Friendly certification is issued by the French body for sustainable development, ‘Ecocert Environnement’ and is based on specific criteria designed to protect bees and pollinators. For example, the use of pesticides identified as harmful to pollinators is prohibited. The label also requires apiaries to be installed on the estates. In partnership with beekeepers, the bees have taken up residence at the Château l'Hospitalet among other estates of the Gérard Bertrand group. The ‘Or & Azur’ colours on the label translate into English as Gold & Azure-blue and are symbolic of the Mediterranean sunshine and the terroirs of the South of France.

Winemaking

Each variety was harvested at optimal maturity and vinified separately in order to capture the characteristics of each variety and the local terroir. The grapes were 100% de-stemmed and fermented for approximately three weeks in stainless steel tanks. The techniques employed to extract the desired level of colour, flavour and structure were specifically tailored to each tank in order to achieve the perfect balance.

Tasting Note

A silky and fine wine delivering layered aromas of wild strawberry and fresh blackcurrant, underlined by notes of spice and garrigue. The fine and silky palate is full of ripe berried fruit and is interwoven with an elegant mineral streak.
