Gaia ‘S’ Agiorgitiko/Syrah 2011

One of the pioneers of the modern Greek wine revolution Gaia Estate was established in 1994 by Greek winemakers Leon Karatsalos and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos. Operating two different wineries they make cutting edge wines in both Nemea and Santorini.

Tasting Note:

Perfumed nose of dark berry fruits and floral notes. Medium bodied palate with subtle tannins, well integrated, with hints of pepper overlaid with silky blueberry fruits. Long, velvety finish - a wine not to be missed.

Style:                      Full bodied

Variety:                  70% Agiorgitiko, 30% Syrah

Viticulture:             Hand-picked grapes blend of native Agiorgitiko variety with Syrah both sourced from the south west slopes of Koutsi, Nemea.

Region:                   Nemea

Soil Type:               Volcanic (porous with high mineral content)

Winemaker:           Leon Karatsalos and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos

Closure:                 Synthetic

Fermentation:       The grapes were cold soaked then slowly fermented in oak casks to ensure a good level of colour and flavour was extracted. The wine was then matured for 12 to 14 months in new French oak casks.

Alcohol:                14%

Food:                    Lamb stew, roasted veal loin, braised vegetables.

Awards:                Rated 92 points by The Wine Gang, March 2009.

I first drunk this wine on a cruise aboard the P and O ship Azura, in Olly Smiths bar The Glasshouse. A tremendous wine full of fruit and a great taste. Thanks to Wine Poole for being able to get this wine for me.
