One of the most modern wineries in the region, Finca OS Cobatos respects tradition but has a free spirit and vision for the future. The winery balances traditional methods with modern production processes to give fresh and characterful wines typical of the region. Monterrei, situated in the southeast corner of Galicia, near the northern Portuguese border, is a recognised DO producing quality wines from indigenous grapes.
Warm weather in 2016 was coupled with low rainfall which led to good maturity levels of the grapes. Harvest took place earlier than usual.
Planted in the early 1980s, the vineyard is one of the oldest in Monterrei. Encompassing 10 hectares, it is planted with the white variety Godello and the aromatic red variety Mencia, which is pronounced "Men-thee-ah". The vineyard is made up of sedimentary soils, which comprise a mix of clay, quartz and sand. The vines are planted on trellises and the average yield is approximately 52 hectolitres per hectare. The vineyard benefits from a high average of sunny days and is the driest appellation in Galicia. Situated at an altitude of 400 to 500 metres above sea level, the warm growing period is tempered by cold autumns due the cooling influence of the Atlantic, providing the ideal growing conditions for quality grapes.
The grapes were harvested at optimum maturity and the highest quality grapes were carefully selected. Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, to maintain the purity of fruit of the Mencia variety. This was followed by three months maturation in new 225 litre American and French Allier oak barrels, which added oak complexity to the resulting wine.
Round and smooth with the highly aromatic notes of black fruits and freshness of the Mencia grape, balanced perfectly by savoury vanilla oak.
Delicious with steak au poivre, charcuterie, barbecued red meats, mushroom risotto and Manchego cheese.
