Doña Paula is a leading, modern winery at the forefront of exploring and investing in new, high quality wine regions in Argentina. Established in 1997, they own all of their vineyards covering 700 hectares. These vineyard sites are located in the best subregions within Mendoza including Ugarteche, Altamira, Gualtallary andTupungato. The vineyards have always been cultivated using sustainable methods, maximising the true expression of terroir. Continuous innovation in vineyardmanagement ensures Doña Paula produces top quality wines from one year to the next.
The 2016 vintage was characterised by a delayed growing season, reduced yields and very good quality. An extremely cold spring delayed the plant physiology bythree weeks on average, with the growing season continuing at cooler temperatures than average years. The result of the El Niño phenomenon was relatively highhumidity and frequent rains. However despite challenging conditions, the grapes were healthy and of good quality at harvest producing wines with excellent varietalexpression.
The grapes were sourced from the El Alto vineyard in Ugarteche, Luján de Cuyo. The estate is located at 1,050 metres above sea level, where the climate typicallypresents warm days and cool nights, with an average temperature variation of 14°C. This diurnal temperature variation encourages a long ripening period, producing a greater concentration of flavours in the grapes while retaining balancing acidity. The soils are predominantly clay loam, but have poor profiles resulting from a mixture ofpebbles, gravel and clay. Irrigated by a drip system, the vines are cultivated using an espalier training method and the vineyards are managed sustainably.
The grapes were hand-picked towards the end of March when they had reached optimal maturity. A cold pre-fermentation maceration took place preserving theprimary fruit aromas. Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks at 25 to 28°C, followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine was made in an unoaked style showcasing the purity of fruit in this distinctive blend.
An intense, complex and vibrant array of fresh fruit aromas are displayed in this stunning Argentinian blend. Wild berry notes come from the Malbec, cherry flavoursfrom the Pinot Noir and the Bonarda imparts juicy layers of blackberry and redcurrant. A voluminous palate with silky tannins leads to a long and pleasant finish.
