Crozes Hermitage 2008, Tain l'Hermitage

Producer Details
At the foot of the famous Hermitage hillside, the Cave de Tain l'Hermitage produces five appellation contrôlée wines, namely Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, St-Joseph, Cornas and St-Péray. The Cave de Tain l'Hermitage owns a 21 hectare domaine within the Hermitage appellation and the winemaker, Xavier Frouin supervises each stage of vinification, from grape reception, classified according to quality, right up to bottling.  The objective of the Cave is to provide wine lovers around the world with authentic wines which bear the full character of their individual " terroir ", bringing out the best through careful and non-intrusive vinification methods. Wine making techniques are highly traditional and successive generations have contributed to the growth and development of the winery by producing grapes of a quality they are now known and admired for.

In the Vineyard
Machine harvesting. Careful selection of grapes depending on the origin, maturity, and quality of the grapes.

In the Winery
The grapes are harvested 75% by machine, 25% hand picked from vineyards with granite and fluvio-glacial alluvium soil, which helps to naturally limit yields to 45 hectolitres per hectare maximum. They are then hand selected at the Cave depending on origin, maturity and state of health - the grapes are categorised as either A, B or C, and incentives and assistance are offered to the growers to upgrade quality to A and B (the Noble Rives label always gets A quality grapes). Destemming followed by fermentation in vats for 8 -12 days at controlled temperature with pumping over twice a day to extract measured amount of tannins, colour and fruit. Gentle pressing in pneumatic presses, then 30% of the wine is aged for 6 - 8 months in 400 litre French oak barrels. The wines are fined with egg whites and undergo light membrane filtration before bottling. Winemaker is Jean-Etienne Guibert.

Grapes: 100% Syrah

ABV: 12.5%

Tasting Notes
Approachable, warm, friendly Syrah with typical peppery characteristics. On the palate the 2008 is light, fresh, friendly, warming and well crafted - a well made 2008.
