In the glass, the wine has a bright ruby colour with a fresh, herby, garrigue nose. A touch of liquorice is followed by full-flavoured and intense, typically southern flavours. Equal measures of Syrah, Carignan and Grenache and a dash of Mouvèdre provide youth, excellent balance and generous and gentle structure.
North of Béziers in the Languedoc, the countryside becomes wild and beautiful in the area around Saint Chinian. The 60 hectare property of Clos Bagatelle is located on the outskirts of the town and has been producing wine here for nearly 400 years. In 1963, the parents of the current owners bought the property and set about renovating the vineyard. They planted new vines, installed new equipment and now the next generation, Christine Deleuze and her brother Luc Simon, continue the family tradition; producing wines of great character, the two have experimented with new blends, including grape varieties not traditionally used in the region. Everything is hand-picked and sorted and there is minimal intervention in the vineyard. Christine, dynamic and clearly passionate about her wines and ‘belle région’, is slowly working towards biodynamic status. Firmly rooted in their place, the wines reflect the particular schist and limestone terroirs of Saint Chinian with energy and poise.
In The Vineyard
Situated at 50kms north of the Mediterranean Sea, Clos Bagatelle is at the foothill of the Caroux and Espinouse mountains. The geological diversity of the soils which constitute the domain represent a single range including schist, limestone and sandstone. This cuvee is produced on limestone soil. The old Carignan and Grenache vines, planted on arid soils, are trained in gobelet. The Syrah and Mourvèdre vines are more recent as they were planted in the 70s.
In The Winery
Syrah 30%, Grenache Noir 30%, Carignan 30% and Mouvèdre 10%. All grapes are handpicked, de-stemmed and the varieties vinified separately - 10 days for the Carignan and 35 for the Mourvèdre - with ageing in large oak casks. It was bottled in May 2014.
What is more convivial than an improvised meal with friends! On the menu, omelette with wild asparagus or an assortment of Chinese dishes, or a carpaccio with olive oil and parmesan or even a chicken curry.
