Chateau La Clare 2004, Cru Bourgeois, Medoc

A real gem of a château producing very consistent, Merlot dominated wines in the Bas-Médoc village of Bégadan, also home to Châteaux La Tour de By and Rollan de By.
The property has been under the ownership of Jean Guyon since 2001 who has made considerable investment here. The wines are made under the watchful eye of Italian Consultant Winemaker, Riccardo Cotarella.

Grapes: Unusually for the Médoc, the vineyards are planted with 45% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon,15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, because of the high proportion of clay in the soil here.
Terroir : 1/3 clay limestone -2/3 ‘graves' which is a mix of gravels, clay and sand deposits

Vine density : 7 000 vines/hectare

Yield: 55 hl/ha

Age of vines: 25 years

Vineyard surface area: 23 ha

Vinification: Traditional vinification

Maturation: After fermentation the wine spends 12 months in French oak barriques. 60% of the barrels are new each vintage and 40% are one year old.

Serve: Grilled red meat, roasted potatoes.

Taste: Lovely nose of cedar combined with chocolate which is carried through to the palate. A mouthfilling and velvety texture with a pleasant, lingering finish. A smooth and elegant wine.
